In a small study of healthy adults 55 and older, 5 mg of melatonin increased total sleep time compared to place.
Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital studied 24 healthy older adults to assess whether high or low doses of melatonin supplements could improve sle.
"Lack of sleep becomes more common as we age, and given the drawbacks of many prescription sleeping pills, many older adults report taking melatonin," said senior author, director of Brigham's Sleep and Circadian Disorders Unit Charles Czeisler sa.
The body naturally produces melatonin, which helps regulate a person's circadian sleep cyc.
To rigorously assess the effects of melatonin supplementation, the study authors focused on healthy older adults with no history of major sleep proble.
During the month-long study, participants lived in study rooms with no windows, clocks or other time indicatio.
The team found that low doses of melatonin did not cause a statistically significant change in overall sleep duration, which was seen when sleeping during biological da.
The authors note that their study needs to be repeated in a larger trial, with other doses of melatonin, to see if doses of 3 to 5 mg would also wo.
