Research from Fudan University found that using traditional breeding methods, the introduction of only one nucleic acid base (DNA) mutation in the genome of one billion base pairs of wheat can lead to the premature termination of a gene for the synthesis of the plant hormone jasmonin, which can up-regulate phenolics.
Ferulic acid, a phenolic compound, is a natural product with the highest antioxidant activity found so far, and is the main active ingredient in traditional Chinese medicines such as Angelica and Chuanxiong
In view of the biological efficacy of ferulic acid, the World Health Organization recommends that the general population take 300 mg of ferulic acid daily to maintain health, but the diet of the vast majority of the population currently does not meet this standard
This research has created a new germplasm resource that can increase the content of ferulic acid in a green, economical and safe way
