A recent research paper by Professor Kazumichi Matsumiya from the Graduate School of Information Sciences at Tohoku University in Japan reveals that the human body relies on multiple maps selected based on the motor system
Details of his research are published in the January 19, 2022, issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
People with motor dysfunction have abnormalities in the hands and feet that can be sensed in the brain
To reveal more information behind the body map, Matsumiya organized an experiment in which participants were asked to point the index finger of their left hand to different parts of their right hand while following with their eyes
Although the eye and left hand were pointing to the same point, the pointed image was more distorted, suggesting the existence of a separate body map
Matsumiya hopes his findings will contribute to the development of new diagnostic techniques for motor dysfunction
