The percentage of rice cropping systems and global average actual rice yield (yellow) and yield gap (red) as a percentage of yield potential

Nanhu News Network (correspondent Yuan Shen) Recently, the team of Professor Shaobing Peng from the State Key Laboratory of Crop Genetic Improvement of our school and the Hongshan Laboratory of Hubei Province joined the team of Professor Patricio Grassini from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and 13 scientific researchers from all over the world The scientific research workers of the unit have scientifically, comprehensively and systematically evaluated the factors such as the yield gap, greenhouse gas emissions, resource consumption and other factors of rice production on a global scale, and have explored effective ways to achieve the goal of green, high-yield, and high-efficiency rice production in the world.

Today, rice, as the staple food for more than half of the world’s population, plays a vital role in global food security

Based on the "two-step method" for the division of rice cropping systems, the scientific research team selected 32 rice cropping systems with large differences in geographic location, climate environment, and cultivation management level, and analyzed the yield potential of these rice cropping systems And yield difference, greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint, water consumption and water footprint, pesticide toxicity index, nitrogen footprint and nitrogen balance, labor input and labor productivity efficiency

The study found that the current global average rice output has reached 57% of the yield potential, but there are big differences between different regions

Yuan Shen, a postdoctoral fellow in the School of Plant Science and Technology of our school, is the first author of the paper.

It is understood that the team of Professor Peng Shaobing of our school has conducted in-depth research on the green development of rice, the efficient use of agricultural resources and the governance of food security for many years, and has achieved many results

    【English summary】

Future rice systems must produce more grain while minimizing the negative environmental impacts.
