On December 9, 2022, Liu Ronghou, a long-term professor at the Biomass Energy Engineering Research Center of the College of Agriculture and Biology of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, officially published the "Integration of two-stage anaerobic digestion process" in the well-known journal Bioresource Technology (SCI, Region 1, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Top Journal, Impact Factor 11.
889), a well-known journal in the field of energy and fuels with in situ biogas upgrading" (
two-stage anaerobic fermentation coupled with in situ biogas purification).
The corresponding author of the paper is Liu Ronghou
, Dean of Agriculture and Biology of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Dominic Yellezuome, a doctoral student at the School of Agriculture and Biology of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is the first author
of the paper.
The collaborators also include: Xianpu Zhu, doctoral student of the School of Agriculture and Biology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xin Liu, Xuwei Liu, Zengzhen Wang, and Yingkai Li, doctoral student; Sun Chen, Associate Professor of Jiaxing University; Mohamed Hemida Abd-Alla, a professor at Essiut University, Egypt; Abdel-Hamied M.

The higher concentration of impurities in biogas limits its widespread commercial use
.
Based on this, this paper reviews the two-stage anaerobic fermentation coupled with in-situ biogas purification technology
.
The principle, main influencing factors, research results and technical challenges
of this technology are emphasized.
The key influencing factors of this technology mainly include pH, alkalinity and the role of
hydrogen-trophic methanogens.
Therefore, pH fluctuations and low hydrogen gas-liquid mass transfer efficiency are the main technical bottlenecks
for the large-scale application of in-situ biogas purification technology.
This paper proposes to construct a two-stage anaerobic fermentation coupled with a variety of in-situ biogas purification technologies, which is expected to solve the above technical bottlenecks, systematically guide the design of future research schemes, and promote the development and commercialization
of coupling technologies.
The purpose of this review is to elaborate on the progress of in situ biogas purification technology and identify current problems with the technology in order to promote the future research and commercialization of
the technology.
