As Ray Verderber, Metal Pigment and Powder Technology Manager atEckart America Corporation, points out, the constant updating/change of rules and requirements by regulators and non-governmental organizations is challenging raw material suppliers in the printing ink industry.
do you think drive the ink raw material trend?
: Today, raw material suppliers face challenges from the market; As a result, one of the trends is the market shift of UV curing agents from commonly used economical light triggers to polymer
. While this shift limits the overall choice of available ingredients that formulator can choose from, it also creates opportunities for those outside the trend to meet the latest market demands.
are there any new applications for metal inks that specialize in printing?
: Printed inks made from vacuum metallic pigments have been used for many years to produce decorative effects that simulate the appearance of metalized substrates. Demand for these types of printing inks has recovered, especially in folding cartons. Metallic plates present challenges in the waste/recycling process, and the removal of printed inks containing metallic pigments is ripe. Printed metal effects help give brands owners who want to provide more sustainable packaging solutions an advantage.

What new pigment products are you currently developing for the printing industry?
: Brand owners and graphic designers are always looking for new effects to differentiate their products on the shelves. One of our latest product developments is the stunning metallic rainbow effect, which replaces holographic foil. This effect was previously only available in solvent-based products, but recent advances in pigment technology have enabled us to now offer this effect in UV-curable printed inks. Further research is under way to determine whether we can also extend the technology to water-based preparations.
