Polyurethane coatings are one of the most powerful and versatile systems available today. We interviewed Ulrich Meier-Westhues, Karsten Danielmeier and Peter Kruppa to find out about the latest trends, the new 0.1% diocyanate regulations and their new books.
current developments that are most needed for polyurethane coatings?
Kruppa: We see an overall trend in efficiency and performance, especially in high solid content and water-
. They have experienced high growth rates over the past few years, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition, anything that helps cure at lower temperatures, cure faster or reduce coatings is the main trend we expect in the coming years. We are providing materials to our customers.
what developments can we expect in the near future in terms of the sustainability of polyurethane?
: Sustainability is at the heart of Cosco and part of our DNA. Innovation inspired by sustainability is a key driver of our activities. Technically, this means that we minimize specific CO2 emissions from our processes. We also develop low VOC products, we use bio-based materials, our materials have very good catalytic activity, reducing the curing temperature. All of this provides sustainability for our customers. Finally, but at least we certainly have recycling and recyclable materials.
the European Union plans to manage substances containing 0.1% upstream polyseocyanate. What are the consequences of PU coatings?
: We expect the restrictions to take effect as early as 2020 and most likely with a four-year transition period. This basically means that if the formula exceeds the threshold of 0.1% weight of isocyanate, everyone who is in contact with the formula needs to be trained. This training is mandatory and needs to be repeated every four years. Cosco started launching a new product line last year with a level of less than 0.1% (by weight), which basically protects people from any additional training. We expect the industry to follow suit and we will see more of these products in the coming years.
you are the author of the new technology book "Polyurethane", what can readers expect?
Meier-Westhues: After a year of intensive work, we are delighted to be able to publish the second edition of this book. When I said it, I meant the author's name on the cover (editorial note: fourth author Edward Squiller is not part of this interview) and Cosco and the global team of co-authors of external partners.
, readers will receive a comprehensive update overview of polyurethanes in coatings, adhesives and sealants. Readers will find descriptions of basic chemistry, application technologies, various markets and branches of various applications - new as well as existing ones. He will find the latest developments in performance, sustainability, combined chemistry and occupational health. In summary, readers will receive a wealth of information and ideas to develop or create solutions for their customers.
