Dementia is the leading cause of death in the elderly population

To assess the relationship between lithium use and the incidence of dementia and its subtypes, academics from Cambridge, UK conducted a retrospective cohort study comparing the period from 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2019 Data on treated patients and results were published in the journal PLOS MEDICINE

The data used were obtained from electronic clinical records of the Secondary Care Mental Health (MH) Service of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT), UK

The cohort included 29,618 patients (548 of whom were on lithium)

There were no significant differences between the two groups in other characteristics, including age, gender and alcohol-related disorders

Cumulative risk of dementia and its subtypes in lithium users

Taken together, lithium use reduces the risk of dementia, further supporting lithium as a possible treatment for dementia
