    Plateplate testing can reveal lung cancer

    Dutch researchers have designed a new method for liquid biopsies. Unlike looking for cancer DNA or other biomarkers in the blood, this method, called tromboSeq, can diagnose non-small cell lung cancer with nearly 90% accuracy by detecting tumor RNA absorbed by circulating plateplates. The study was published August 14 in
    Journal.
    , a researcher in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Free University of Amsterdam, said: "The purpose of a liquid biopsy-based cancer test is to detect all cancers at an early stage. ThromboSeq may not only provide a diagnosis of lung cancer, but may also diagnose other types of tumors and may give tumors a type. The
    plateplates respond to a range of inflammatory events and cancers. Because plateplates do not have a nucleocle, all RNA found on plateplates comes from RNA absorbed by giant nucleocytes or plateplates in the blood. Plateplates in cancer-free populations contain a different RNA assembly.
    researchers studied blood samples from more than 700 people, including patients diagnosed with advanced non-small cell lung cancer, an earlier early cancer group, and a control group of unknown cancers. Patients with diseases such as multiple sclerosis, chronic pancreatitis and coronary artery disease were also included in the control group to ensure that the algorithm screened cancer-specific RNA.
    thromboSeq scanned about 5,000 different RNA molecules found on plateplates and continuously optimized their RNA genomes to reach a small number of RNA that identifies tumors. The researchers then screened blood samples to test the accuracy of cancer diagnosis.
    results showed that the thromboSeq test was able to diagnose early cancer with 81% accuracy and 88% accuracy with advanced cancer diagnosis. In the control group of age, smoking status and blood storage time, the accuracy of the algorithm was as high as 91%. Best believes the technology is robust enough to begin clinical trials.
