Optogenetics, considered a promising therapy for many psychological and neurological disorders, may be more difficult to apply effectively in humans than observers previously thought, a new paper notes

Optogenetics has received considerable attention as it shows promise for manipulating cells and circuits in the rodent brain

A recent review led by Sébastien Tremblay of the University of Pennsylvania and published in the journal Neuron says that optogenetics may be effective in human therapy

The Neuron review consists of contributions from 45 research laboratories, with a total of 1042 independent data points

The researchers here believe that the definition of experimental success for neuronal research is too broad

The researchers here hypothesize that meaningful evidence for the successful application of optogenetics in neuroscience requires some evidence that, in addition to the observed changes in animal behavior, neurons have been modulated by this technique

The paper's lead author, Eliza Bliss-Moreau, said these lower numbers don't mean scientists should abandon optogenetics as a subject for research and potential treatments

A pragmatic re-evaluation of the efficacy of nonhuman primate optogenetics for psychiatry
