Research Background:
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with a variety of disorders, while oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a very common comorbidity
.
Parental training, as an evidence-based intervention, appears to be effective in reducing externalizing/destructive behavior, potentially leading to a better prognosis
.
This clinical trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of
online parent training models as complementary treatments for ADHD and ODD.
Research Methods:
Patients and their families will be screened
upon admission to UFMG's Center for Impulse and Attention Research (NITIDA) in Brazil.
Ninety families will be invited to participate, with children who are male, aged 6-12 years, with significant externalizing symptoms and whose primary caregivers have a full high school education
.
Families will be randomly (1:1) divided into 03 groups: 1) standard care; 2) Standard care + face-to-face parent training; 3) Standard care + online parent training
.
The interventions were similar, but differed
in the form of implementation.
In the face-to-face format, the intervention will be carried out by a dedicated therapist and the online format will be carried out
through a platform.
There will be six lessons/modules, scheduled once a
week.
Measurements
of externalizing symptoms, quality of life of parents and children, parental stress, and parenting style will be collected at baseline and after the intervention.
Research Discussion:
This clinical trial aims to validate the effects of a new, online, evidence-based intervention model that will allow for wider use
within Brazil.
