A new study found that obese patients with certain advanced prostate cancer live longer than overweight and normal-weight patients
The study was published today at the European Association of Urology Congress and followed more than 1,500 patients over a period of 3 years
Although obesity is usually associated with an increased risk of death from many cancers and some other chronic diseases, there is some evidence in some cancers that patients with a high body mass index have a survival advantage
Nicola Fossati, Alberto Martini and colleagues of the University of San Rafael in Italy want to test whether the "obesity paradox" applies to patients with metastatic emasculation-resistant prostate cancer-a type that no longer responds to testosterone-lowering treatments Advanced disease
They observed the survival rate of 1,577 patients in three different clinical trials.
Dr.
"This obesity paradox has also been seen in some other cancers.
"However, we will not recommend that anyone suffering from this or other diseases gain weight
Professor Peter Albers from Düsseldorf University is the chair of the EAU Scientific Assembly Office.
