15, 2020 // -- In a recent study published in the international journal Nutrinents, scientists from the University of Otago and others found that adults on a diet with low levels of vitamin C can help boost the body's vitality by consuming two kiwis a day for two weeks in a row.
the study, researchers conducted a placebo-controlled intervention trial to test whether increasing vitamin C intake through whole fruits or pills improved the body's vitality and enthusiasm for life.
researchers recruited 167 participants between the ages of 18 and 35 with lower baseline levels of vitamin C and then randomly divided them into three groups, namely, the kiwi group, the equivalent of vitamin C tablets (250 mg) or the placebo group. Over the next four weeks, participants were asked to eat two golden sun kiwis a day (a fruit with high levels of vitamin C) or take pills, and throughout the study, participants were tested for vitamin C in their blood every two weeks and asked about their mood, fatigue and health status.
Photo Source: The Pixabay/CC0 Public Domain study showed that participants in the kiwi and vitamin C intake groups rose to normal levels of vitamin C within two weeks, while the placebo group had no effect, but the researchers found an unexpected phenomenon in which kiwi group participants reported significant improvements in the body's vitality after ingesting kiwi.
Tamlin Conner, a professor at the University of London, says the benefits of whole fruits are broad and can help reduce body fatigue, improve mood and well-being, more than participants who take supplements.
vitamin C tablets do reduce body fatigue and to some extent improve the well-being of individuals with lower vitamin C levels, but interestingly, the benefits of kiwi intake can be seen in just two weeks.
Vitamin C plays a number of functions in the body and brain, increasing the production of a variety of hormones and neurotransmitters, including epinephrine, serotonin and oxytocin (which control the body's stress levels, regulate mood and promote the body's well-being), the researchers also said that while the relationship between vitamin C and body function is well documented, the study also identifies the key role vitamin C plays in the body's psychological function, in addition to the psychological benefits of eating whole fruits.
researchers say that by eating whole fruits such as kiwi to increase the body's vitamin C levels, people are expected to get other active ingredients that are beneficial to the health of the body and brain system.
For example, kiwis contain a large amount of additional vitamins and minerals, which can support the body's health, but also contain rich dietary fiber beneficial to the body's intestinal health, there is a very important link between the intestinal and body mood regulation, this study can also help explain why kiwis are more beneficial to the body's mood than the intake of vitamin C tablets.
