This link was detected in DNA methylation in the region of the non-coding RNA 886 gene (nc886 gene)
.
"DNA methylation is an epigenetic mechanism that shuts down gene expression
.
Gene expression regulates cell and tissue function
"Those born in families with the highest socioeconomic status and whose mothers are between 21 and 30 years old seem to have lower numbers of individuals whose mother chromosomes are also unmethylated and also express RNA," Martila said
.
Studies have shown that in 40 years of follow-up, the DNA methylation status of the nc886 gene determined by early development is stable from childhood to adulthood
.
The content of nc886 RNA in the blood of people whose chromosomes are not methylated is twice that of the normal population.
"From a molecular biologist's point of view, this is a beautiful example of epigenetic imprinting," Matila and Raito Harju said
.
"However, from a health perspective, the results of the study have become more interesting
.
We found that people who also express the nc886 gene from the mother's chromosome (approximately 25% of the population) have higher insulin levels and blood sugar levels during puberty.
"Therefore, the molecular profile determined in the early fetus is related to adult health," she continued
.
The role of a single gene in the whole is small, but in this case, the difference in nc886 expression exists in all tissues throughout the life cycle
.
The link with sugar and lipid metabolism suggests that this may play a role in the individual's subsequent risk of disease
The research team will further study the impact of differences in nc886 gene expression on health in the future
The data used in the study includes, among other things, follow-up data from the Young Finns study, which has been conducted for 40 years, and corresponding German KORA data
