New findings: Oral chlorophyll supplements relieve inflammatory bowel disease
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis) is a group of chronic gastrointestinal diseases that impose a huge global health burden on the cost of treatment
Current treatments for IBD are mainly drugs that suppress the immune system (immunosuppressants) and surgery
According to new research published in the American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, the dietary supplement chlorophyll may relieve IBD
In this study, the researchers used 5-6-year-old male mice
The researchers repeatedly treated mice with 3% dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) in drinking water to induce chronic colitis
The researchers found that chlorophyll treatment significantly reduced colitis and intestinal epithelial abnormalities in the mice: DSS-mediated weight loss and colon length shortening were prevented, and stool consistency and blood in the stool were also significantly reduced
In addition, the researchers found that consumption of green vegetables and chlorophyll may contribute to recovery from IBD, in part by reducing inflammation and autolysosomal flux (a process that utilizes lysosomes to degrade and remove toxic molecules and organelles)
The researchers believe that these results reveal the potential application of chlorophyll in the treatment of IBD, which may be further extended to the consumption of green vegetables to alleviate IBD
