Using intravital calcium imaging, the researchers found that SEL neuronal clusters contained two distinct subtypes of serotonergic neurons
The researchers found that another group of serotonergic neurons, bitter-SELs, were not directly involved in the regulation of feeding
Thus, this study reveals that two serotonergic neuron subtypes utilize taste stimuli to predict future feeding and changes in energy in the body, and pre-regulate endocrine and digestive tract functions to maintain energy balance in the body
