The concept of strenuous exercise (PA) as a risk factor for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was first mentioned in 1962, and was later used by several famous athletes such as Lou Gehrig and Italian football players during professional sports.
The story of suffering from ALS after a lot of exercise is supported
.
Since then, some cohort studies have found that Italian and American football and rugby players are at risk of ALS
.
It is further implied that (severe) PA may be a risk factor for ALS from a study involving a large number of patients who are exposed to work-related and sports-related physical exercises
.
On the other hand, some studies have reported that strenuous exercise has no effect or even a protective effect on the risk of ALS
.
Interestingly, in a large study including nearly 70 million patients in the United Kingdom, no coronary heart disease (mean heart vascular health of patients) compared with Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis, suffering from a slight increase in the risk of ALS
.
Case-control studies did not show consistent results regarding PA as a risk factor for ALS
Heart vascular exposure time and intensity may be related to the direction and intensity associated
In ALS cases (393 cases, 791 age- and sex-matched control groups), they observed a reduction in total PA at the time of the interview and 5 years before the interview compared with the control group
.
There was no relationship between total PA and the risk of ALS in the 5-55 years before follow-up
.
Heavy occupational work intensity is associated with an increased risk of ALS (OR=1.
97, 95%-CI (1.
The total PA level is related to survival in a non-linear manner: inactive patients and the highest activity level (25 METh/week) showed the worst survival time, respectively 15.
4/19.
3 months
.
After adjusting for other prognostic factors, the median survival of 10.
Compared with the control group, the lifetime comprehensive PA dropped sharply in the years before the onset of the disease
.
The risk of ALS has nothing to do with the total PA level 5-55 years before the interview.
There is a strong non-linear relationship between current and pre- diagnosis PA levels and the survival of ALS cases, with moderate PA having the best survival
.
PA intensity may be a disease-modifying factor, which has adverse consequences for sedentary and hyperactive behaviors
There is a strong non-linear relationship between the diagnosis of PA level and the survival of ALS cases, and the survival of moderate PA is the best
