Chronic kidney disease is a worldwide public health problem and is considered an established risk factor for stroke

Study participants were 10,392 adults with acute stroke enrolled in the Japan Stroke Database, a hospital-based multicenter stroke registry, between October 2016 and December 2019, with available baseline serum creatinine levels or titrated proteinuria results.

All ischemic strokes were classified according to the Org 10172 test criteria in acute stroke treatment

RESULTS: Overall, 2419 (23%) patients had an eGFR of 45-59 mL/min/1.

Similar associations were demonstrated with the proportions of these 2 subtypes in analyses using eGFR decline as a continuous value

Taken together, renal impairment contributes to distinct distributions and clinical outcomes of specific stroke subtypes, particularly in cardioembolic stroke and small vessel occlusion
