Evidence regarding the timing of memory changes after the first and recurrent strokes is limited and inconsistent
.
To this end, experts from the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health Research of University College London, UK, investigated the memory trajectories before and after the first and recurrent strokes in 18 European countries, and tested whether the acute stroke care at the national level is consistent with the memory changes after the stroke.
Evidence regarding the timing of memory changes after the first and recurrent strokes is limited and inconsistent
The researchers applied multi-level piecewise linear regression to quantify the acute and accelerated memory changes (measured by the total score of the immediate and delayed word recall tests; 0-20 words) in the two groups before and after the first and recurrent strokes
.
The relationship between stroke and memory was compared between countries with different levels of acute stroke care indicators
Stroke
The final analysis sample included 35,164 participants (≥50 years of age) who had no stroke at baseline
.
Between 2004 and 2019, 2362 first-onset and 341 recurrent strokes were identified
The average acute drop in memory scores after the first and recurrent strokes were 0.
After the hypothetical non-stroke onset date, no such acute decline was observed in the control group
It can be seen that memory declines acutely after the first and recurrent strokes, but there is no accelerated decline

Improved endovascular treatment may be related to smaller memory loss after stroke
It can be seen that memory declines acutely after the first and recurrent strokes, but there is no accelerated decline
