    We investigated memory trajectories before and after first and recurrent stroke in 18 European countries and tested whether national acute stroke care was associated with post-stroke memory changes

    First stroke and recurrent stroke were identified in individuals without stroke at baseline


    Within each country, each participant with a stroke (case group) was matched with an individual without stroke (control group) using propensity score matching


    • The final analysis sample included 35,164 participants who were stroke-free at baseline (≥50 years of age)

      Between 2004 and 2019, a total of 2362 first strokes and 341 recurrent strokes were identified;
    • In the case group, the mean acute decline in memory scores after first stroke and recurrent stroke was 0.


      The study found sharp, but not accelerated, declines in memory after first and repeated strokes
