the saliva of mosquitoes can affect the efficiency of virus transmission. Recently, Cheng Gong, a professor at Tsinghua University School of Medicine, found a Aedes aegypti saliva protein Aava-1, verified its mechanism to affect the spread of the virus, and provided a new intervention target for mosquito-borne virus prevention and control. The study was published January 14 in Nature -Newsletter.
mosquito bites mammals, the virus enters the body's skin with saliva, infecting immune cells and amplification, which can lead to systemic infections.
Chenggong et al. assessed the effects of 32 Aedes aegypti saliva proteins on virus replication and found that saliva proteins called Aava-1 had a role in promoting Zika virus and dengue virus-infected immune cells.
when Aava-1 was injected into mice with the Zika virus, symptoms of viralemia caused by the Zika virus increased significantly and mice died at an accelerated rate. Reducing Ava-1 levels in the Aedes aegypti mosquito would significantly reduce its ability to transmit the Zika virus.
also found that AaVA-1 competes with other proteins, activating cell autophagy, which in turn promotes viral infections. "Therefore, intervention in host autophagy and the development of vaccines targeting the Aava-1 protein will have the potential to reduce the spread of the Zika virus." Cheng Gong told China Science Daily. (Source: Ren Fangyan, China Science Journal)
