During an official visit to China from October 30 to November 1, 2022, the relevant departments and localities of the two countries signed 13 cooperation documents covering various fields, including the Protocol between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China on the Plant Quarantine Requirements for the Export of Vietnamese Fresh Bananas
    to China.

Vietnam's Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Huan said the protocol would bring benefits and opportunities
to Vietnamese banana growers and banana exporters, according to the VNA.

The protocol will ensure the stable and sustainable development of Vietnam's banana exports, ensure yield and stable prices, help transform agricultural structure, and bring benefits
    to banana farmers.

Minister Li Minh Huan pointed out that the implementation of the protocol will help reduce the plant inspection and quarantine rate at ports, speed up customs clearance time, create favorable conditions for export enterprises, and also help reduce congestion at agricultural product border ports, reduce market risks, and enhance the credibility
    of Vietnamese bananas in China.

The Protocol has some new features, such as all banana growing areas and packaging facilities exported to China must be approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam and the General Administration of Customs of China, the growing areas must be produced in accordance with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) standards, and the packaging process of the growing areas and packaging facilities must be monitored
    .
Packaging facilities are required to meet product traceability requirements, must undergo 2% phytosanitary sampling when exporting to China, and must comply with Chinese food safety standards, among other
    things.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will increase its advocacy efforts to raise awareness
of the Protocol among farmers, growing areas and packaging facilities.
The subordinates of the Ministry of Industry and Trade will focus on promoting the development of this industry and helping farmers improve product quality
    .

In 2019, the banana planting area in Vietnam reached nearly 129,550 hectares, of which the Jiulongjiang Delta planted nearly 35,300 hectares, with an output of 478877 tons
    .
Phytosanitary exports of bananas to China exceeded 430,000 tonnes (2020), 574,000 tonnes (2021) and 591,000 tonnes (first nine months of 2022).
