Needless to say, heavy physical work is exhausting, but what about heavy mental work? Sitting and thinking for hours can also be exhausting

Their research shows that when high-intensity cognitive work continues for hours, it causes potentially toxic byproducts to build up in areas of the brain's prefrontal cortex

Mathias Pessiglione of the University of Pitié-Salpêtrière in Paris, France, said: "Influential theories suggest that fatigue is an illusion created by the brain that makes us stop whatever we're doing and engage in more satisfying activities

Pessiglione and his colleagues, including the study's lead author Antonius Wiehler, wanted to understand what mental fatigue really is

To find evidence to support this theory, they used magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to monitor brain chemistry during the workday

They saw signs of fatigue, including miosis, only in the group doing heavy mental work

So, is there any way to overcome the limitations of our brain's ability to think so hard?

    "I'm afraid not," Pessiglione said

The findings may also have other practical implications

In future studies, the researchers hope to understand why the prefrontal cortex appears to be particularly vulnerable to glutamate accumulation and fatigue
