In a 20-year scientific surveillance, stricter adherence to the Mediterranean diet, as assessed by an index of biomarkers, was associated with lower mortality in adults over the age of 65
The paper, published in the journal BCM Medicine, was done in collaboration with the National Institute on Aging (NIA)
As Ulaanbaatar University professor Cristina Andrés-Lacueva, who leads the CIBERFES research group, said: "We developed an index of dietary biomarkers based on the types of foods in the Mediterranean diet and assessed their relationship to mortality
For this study, researchers selected reference levels of the following dietary biomarkers in urine: total polyphenols and resveratrol metabolites (from grape intake), those present in plasma, plasma carotenoids, selenium , vitamin B12, fatty acids and their ratios of monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids
During the 20-year monitoring period, there were 425 deaths (139 from cardiovascular disease and 89 from cancer-related causes)
This study highlights the use of dietary biomarkers to improve nutritional assessments and guide assessments tailored to older adults
