Organelles within cells are constantly performing specific functions, just as
individual departments in an organization handle certain tasks.
Professor Young-Tae Chang of the Department of Chemistry at Pohang University (Associate Director of the Center for Self-Assembly and Complexity of the Institute of Basic Sciences (IBS)) and Dr.
Detecting intracellular temperature changes that are closely related to cellular processes can provide clues to understanding the complex functions of organelles
.
To overcome this limitation, the joint research team developed a series of new fluorescent thermometers (Thermo Greens, tg) that can visualize temperature changes in almost all organelle types, including cell membranes, nuclei, Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, lipid droplets, and lysosomes
.
The tg is considered to be the first small molecule fluorescence thermometer that can cover almost all typical organelles
.
The research was supported
by IBS, the Japan Science and Technology Agency and the Japan Association for the Promotion of Science.
