A new study published in mBio, a publicly published journal of the American Society for Microbiology, opens the door to new ways to attack the herpes virus
"Many people know about the herpes simplex virus, but there are actually nine different families of herpes viruses, including cytomegalovirus (CMV), which can cause a lot of problems in immunocompromised people, such as patients undergoing transplants and chemotherapy
Ideally, there should be a drug that inhibits the reactivation of all nine herpes viruses, Wright said
In test-tube studies, the researchers tested a series of compounds for their ability to inhibit specific metal-ion-dependent enzymes and replication of the herpes virus
Although HIV integrase inhibitors have been reported to inhibit herpes virus replication, the researchers found that integrase inhibitors exhibited weaker overall anti-HSV-1 activity
