Replacing regular table salt with low-sodium, high-potassium low-sodium salt not only saves costs, but also reduces the risk of stroke morbidity and death, according to a new study
On April 3, Professor Bruce Neal of the George Institute for Global Health in Australia released the findings at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology in Washington, D.
For now, low sodium should be seen as a key part of all salt reduction efforts, said study senior author Thomas Lung, a senior research fellow at the George Institute for Global Health in Australia
Globally, excessive salt intake (more than 5 grams per day) is responsible for 3 million deaths each year
From April 2014 to January 2015, the researchers recruited 21,000 subjects with a history of stroke or uncontrolled blood pressure in 600 villages in Hebei, Liaoning, Ningxia, Shanxi and Shaanxi
In the new analysis, the researchers weighed the costs associated with the low-sodium intervention and compared it to the cost savings from fewer hospitalizations for stroke prevention and the associated quality of life gains
The study's corresponding author, Dr.
