A new study published a few days ago in "Science Reports" found that listening to the two piano sonata in D major (K448) of Austrian classicist Mozart for at least 30 seconds can reduce epilepsy-related brain problems in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.
This study also shows that the positive emotional response to K448 may help improve the effectiveness of the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy
Previous studies have shown that listening to K448 is associated with the lower frequency of epilepsy-related electrical activity spikes in the brains of patients with epilepsy
Robert Quon and colleagues of Dartmouth Gesell College of Medicine in Hanover, New Hampshire, USA, used electroencephalography (EEG) to measure 16 adults with drug-resistant epilepsy.
Researchers found that listening to K448 for 30 to 90 seconds was associated with an average reduction in the number of electrical activity spikes related to brain epilepsy by 66.
Researchers found that this reduction is most in the left and right prefrontal cortex, which is involved in regulating emotional responses
Scientists hypothesized that just listening to K448 for 30 seconds may activate the brain's network that is related to the positive emotional response to music and is regulated by the prefrontal lobe
