Purpose

Volatile anesthetics (VAs) have protective effects on cardiomyocytes during cardiovascular surgery

method

We randomized 24 patients on elective cardiopulmonary bypass into two groups (desflurane and sevoflurane) and then randomly assigned to use four brands of oxygenators: Trumo, Rivanova, Medtronic, and Sen.

result

The average concentration (standard deviation) of halothane and sevoflurane in the human lungs was 182.

in conclusion

Our results indicate that plasma concentrations of desflurane and sevoflurane after passage through the oxygenator during CPB were similar to human lung controls
