What the study said: The results of this follow-up study of women over 45 years of age in Denmark showed that systemic administration of hormone therapy (oral or percutaneous) before and during menopause was associated with a high risk of depression, especially shortly after menopause, while topical hormone therapy (vaginal or in utero) was associated
with a lower risk of depression in women aged 54 years and older.
