Temporary holistic amnesia (TGA) is generally considered a benign event, but the recurrence rate varies widely among individuals, and researchers recently studied risk factors associated with TGA recurrence.
researchers analyzed the medical records of first- or relapsed TGA patients submitted to the Mayo Clinic between August 1, 1992 and February 28, 2018, and collected demographic, induced, migraine, imaging and electrodiagnosis results, and family history of TGA patients in 1044 cases that met TGA diagnostic criteria.
1,044 patients, 575 were men, with an average age of 75.0 years.
total of 901 patients were patients with single TGA episodes (86.3%) and 143 patients with TGA recurrence (13.7%).
in age, gender, identifiable triggers, and duration of oblivion between the two groups.
in patients with recurrence, the number of relapses ranged from 1-9 and 137 (95.8%) experienced more than three relapses.
the average age of onset was 65.2 years in patients with a single episode of TGA, while the average age of first onset in patients with recurrence was 58.8 years.
180 (20.0%) of patients with a single seizure had a history of migraines, compared with 36.4% of patients with relapses, 18.5% of patients with single seizures and 30.8% of patients with relapses.
, acute and subacute temporal lobe abnormal magnetic resonance imaging results were not associated with TGA recurrence.
12 (1.3%) patients with single episodes had a family TGA history, while the proportion of patients with relapse had a family TGA history of 2.8%.
study, patients with relapsed temporary total amnesia had a lower age for the first time, and a higher proportion of migraines and familial migraines.
