December 3, 2020 /--- Researchers at Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine say cancer cases among adolescents have increased by 30 percent over the past four decades, with the fastest increase in the incidence of kidney cancer.
team said further research into screening, diagnosis and treatment was needed to address the growing trend in this age group.
, assistant professor of radiation oncology and public health science at the University of London, said cancer is the main cause of disease-related death in this age group, and more and more cases are of concern.
are unique groups," zaorsky said.
they are often grouped in studies with pediatric or adult patients.
it is important to study the differences in this group in order to develop care guidelines to respond to the increase in cases.
(Photo: www.pixabay.com) researchers analyzed data on nearly half a million cancer patients aged 15 to 39 in the United States over 40 years, including gender, age at the time of diagnosis, and type of cancer.
data were collected by the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Program.
team aims to determine the number of cancer cases among adolescents and young people between 1973 and 2015.
results were published in jama network open on December 1.
the study period, researchers found that the rate of cancer diagnosis increased from 57 to 74 per 100,000 adolescents.
most common types in men are testicular cancer, melanoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
most common types of cancer in women are breast, thyroid, cervical and uterine cancers.
zaorsky, a researcher at the Pennsylvania State Cancer Institute, said the incidence of kidney, thyroid and gastrointestinal cancers is increasing in this age group.
: 'Our data reinforces the fact that clinicians should be aware of these cancers in their adolescent and adult patients.
further research is needed to determine why kidneys, thyroid, gastrointestinal and other types of cancer are on the rise in adolescents and young people, zaorsky said.
he said changes in the environment, diet and screening during the study period may have been the cause of the increase in morbidity.
cancers have unique risk factors," said Zaorsky, a cancer research group.
" "Now that there is a better understanding of the prevalent and rising types of cancer in this age group, prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment programmes should be developed for this population."
