Opioids are widely used for postoperative pain control after orthopedic surgery, and as of 2018, orthopedic surgeons are among the departments with the highest number of opioids in North America, and in clinical practice, orthopedic opioids are often prescribed in doses that exceed the recommended doses in guidelines, which is a major cause
This randomized clinical trial was conducted at three clinical centers in Ontario, Canada, and enrolled 200 patients from March 2021 to March 2022, with final follow-up completed
Of the 200 patients, with an average age of 43 years, 73 women, and 193 patients (97 percent) completed the trial, of which 98 were randomized to standard care and 95 were given an opioid tapering regimen
The study concluded that in patients undergoing arthroscopic knee or shoulder surgery, the naproxen-acetaminophen-pantoprazole alternative significantly reduced opioid consumption within 6 weeks postoperative compared with standard opioid prescriptions, with no significant difference
