In the United States, stroke is the second leading cause of cardiovascular-related death and severe disability.
Compared with other races, American Indians have a relatively higher risk of cardiovascular disease and show a higher risk of stroke.
Although this population has the highest incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) compared with other populations, the relationship between atrial fibrillation and ischemic stroke in American Indian populations has not been studied in depth.
A recent study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association assessed the risk of ischemic stroke among American Indians and compared it with white, black, Hispanic, and Asian populations.
It found that American Indians compared with other races The population has the highest risk of atrial fibrillation, but American Indians have the highest risk of ischemic stroke, regardless of whether there is atrial fibrillation.
The study included all 16,951,579 adult patients in the emergency department, inpatient ward, or outpatient surgery from 2005 to 2011.
Among them, 105,822 (0.
6%) were from the American Indiana population.
The average follow-up time was 4.
1 years.
Factors such as age, gender, income level, high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, heart surgery, valvular heart disease, chronic kidney disease, smoking, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, lung disease, and alcohol consumption Later, compared with non-American Indians with atrial fibrillation, American Indians had the highest risk of ischemic stroke (HR 1.
38 95% CI [1.
23-1.
55]; P<0.
0001).
American Indians have the highest overall risk of stroke, and there is no evidence that atrial fibrillation increases this risk in cross-analysis.
Kaplan-Meier curves of ischemic stroke events in American Indians and non-American Indians with/without atrial fibrillation.
In short, regardless of whether they suffer from atrial fibrillation, the American Indiana population has the highest risk of ischemic stroke.
This finding may provide directions for further research on anticoagulation strategies in patients with atrial fibrillation in the American Indiana population.
