Cardiovascular risk burden is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cognitive decline, but the relationship between it and disability is not clear.
A recent study published in JAHA, an authoritative journal in the field of cardiovascular disease, looked at the association between cardiovascular risk burden and disability risk and progression assessed by the Flemingham Comprehensive Cardiovascular Risk Score (FGCRS) and estimated the extent to which CVD and cognitive decline mediated this association.
researchers followed a total of 1,480 elderly people without disabilities (average age: 79.32 to 7.38 years) for up to 21 years, and calculated FGCRS at the baseline of the subjects and classified them by trilateral.
the degree of disability is assessed annually through daily activities.
researchers calculated the number of CVDs by summarizing CVD events.
subjects were tested 19 tests a year to assess overall cognitive function.
used Cox models, linear hybrid effect models, and mediated analysis to analyze the study data.
at the end of follow-up, 713 (48.2 per cent) of the participants had a disability.
participants with the lowest tri-digit FGCRS had a multi-adjusted disability risk ratio of 1.34 (95% CI of 1.11-1.62).
addition, the highest tri-digitS of FGCRS was associated with changes in daily life activity scores over time (beta-0.057; 95% CI was 0.021-0.093).
13.8% and 25.1% of the correlation between FGCRS and changes in daily life activities were mediated by CVD and cognitive decline, respectively.
, the higher cardiovascular risk burden increases the risk of disability and accelerates its development over time.
link may be partly mediated by the use of CVD and cognitive decline.
