The researchers identified anterior circulation ischemic stroke patients or patients with atrial fibrillation who met ESUS standards and were examined by cervical CT angiography.
The researchers compared the volume of plaque components (calcium, intraplaque hemorrhage [IPH], and lipid-rich necrotic core) by gender, and compared the stroke on the same side with the contralateral side through a paired analysis.
The researchers identified a total of 94 ESUS patients (55% were women) and 95 patients with atrial fibrillation (47% were women).
Thus, the gender differences in the composition of carotid plaques in ESUS patients indicate that non-stenotic carotid plaques are different in the mechanisms of stroke in men and women.
