News from March 1, 2021 //---A new study shows that aerobic exercise may help slow down memory loss in elderly people with Alzheimer's dementia.
The Department of Nursing and Health Innovation at Arizona State University Edson led a randomized controlled trial that included 96 elderly people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s dementia.
Participants were randomly divided into cycling (stationary bicycle) or stretching intervention for six months.
Using the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale Awareness (ADAS-Cog) to assess cognition, the results of this trial are impressive.

"Our main findings indicate that compared with the natural course of Alzheimer’s dementia, a six-month aerobic exercise intervention can significantly reduce cognitive decline.
However, we did not find that aerobic exercise is better than stretching.
Exercise has a better effect, which may be due to the experimental nature of this experiment.
We do not have the statistical ability to detect differences between groups, there is a great social interaction effect in the stretching exercise group, and many stretching exercise participants do it themselves Aerobic exercise.

The findings were recently published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.
The author of the article, Professor Yu, said that their findings are encouraging and support the promotion of aerobic exercise in patients with Alzheimer's dementia to maintain the clinical significance of cognition.
"Aerobic exercise has little effect on the adverse events of elderly patients with Alzheimer's disease.
Regardless of its impact on cognition, the current collective evidence on its benefits supports aerobic exercise as an alternative treatment for Alzheimer's disease.
