2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) can lead to systemic clotting activation and complications of thrombosisIn a recent study published in journal Sthrombosis and Haemostasis, an authoritative journal of thrombosis and clotting disease, researchers investigated the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in 198 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 patients75 patients (38%) were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)At the time of data collection, 16 (8 per cent) remained hospitalized and 19 per cent of patients diedDuring the 7-day median follow-up period (IQR 3-13), 39 (20%) patients were diagnosed with VTE, 25 (13%) of whom had symptomatic VTE, despite routine prevention of thrombosisThe cumulative incidence of VTE on the 7th, 14th and 21st days was 16% (95% CI 10-22), 33% (95% CI was 23-43) and 42% (95% CI was 30-54)For symptomatic VTe, 10% (95% CI is 5.8-16), 21% (95% CI is 14-30) and 25% (95% CI is 16-36), respectivelyVTE appears to be related to death (corrected HR is 2.4; 95% CI is 1.02-5.5)The cumulative incidence of VTE in ICU patients (26% (95% CI is 17-37), 47% (95% CI is 34-58) and 59% (95% CI is 42-72) were higher compared to patients in general wards (in general wards) Any VTE and symptomatic VTE occurred on 7, 14 and 21 days, respectively, 5.8% (95% CI is 1.4-15), 9.2% (95% CI is 2.6-21) and 9.2% (95% CI is 2.6-21) respectively, the high risk of VTE in patients with COVID-19, especially in patients staying in the ICU, suggests that DVT or PE diagnostic imaging should be conducted more widelyFuture studies should focus on the best diagnostic and prevention strategies to prevent VTE and improve survival rates in PATIENTs with COVID-19
