Suppliers have been promoting new and allegedly more effective additives. But who is thinking about using them in paint formulations? We interviewed João Machedo, technical director of CIN, a Portuguese paint manufacturer.
you see that the development of the additive industry may reduce the complexity of formulating designers
said João Machado, technical director of
CIN (Corpora?oIndustrialdo Norte)
: To be honest, I haven't seen much development in the additive industry that can make life easier for
. In fact, not only is there a lack of important new additives in this area, but a few of the new additives we tested did not achieve the desired results.
, however, I've recently heard of high-performance multifunction additives that can improve both pigment color development and coating durability. These new additives may sound interesting in helping to reduce the complexity of formulaters, but they still need to be thoroughly tested.
trends do you think will affect the additive market in the near future?
Machado: In architectural coatings, the additive market will be affected in the near future or in the medium term by trends such as energy conservation, indoor air quality, environmental footprint, and bio-based and renewable products. In fact, in this area, incentive taxes on ecological footprints, indoor air quality and bio-based products may result in stricter regulations.
in industrial coatings, the growth of smart coatings such as self-healing, fingerprint-resistant, acetaldehyde-resistant and resistance-reducing coatings will drive the development of new additives. However, there will certainly be significant restrictions on nanomaterials, which will affect the development of additives.
finally, in protective coatings, the additive market will be affected by restrictions or legislation on VOC emissions, forcing the development of low VOC or water-based coatings, resulting in additives that guarantee excellent corrosion resistance under these conditions.
additives market will continue to face REACH regulations that increase restrictions related to the treatment, transportation and labelling of certain substances and the anticipated reclassifying or even elimination of certain chemicals due to their toxicity.
