paper published recently in the journal Nature-Communication reports on the use of in-body organ support systems to regenerate damaged pig lungs. Preliminary results show that the damaged pig lungs may be repairable and used for organ transplantation.
inhalation refers to the entry of substances from the stomach into the respiratory tract, a common injury that prevents the lungs from being used for transplantation. Given that the world is now facing a shortage of transplanted donors, damaged lung regeneration technology is expected to expand the pool of organs suitable for transplantation.
Bacchetta and colleagues at Vanderburg University in Tennessee studied the possibility of meeting transplant standards after the regeneration of severely damaged lungs. In eight pigs, the researchers reproduced inhalation damage to stomach contents and maintained organs by connecting damaged lungs to the circulatory system of the animals through an in vitro support system. Using this cross-cycling system, the supply lungs can last up to 36 hours outside the pig, allowing a range of treatment interventions to be carried out. The system not only allows the damaged lungs to regenerate, but also improves their function, and the regenerated lungs meet all transplant conditions.
, however, the researchers say further research is needed to determine the functional lung capacity after lung transplantation and the safety of the method. Since organ transplantation in the human body must be immunosuppressive, the impact of immunosuppression on lung recovery should be further assessed in the future.
