    The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced on September 29 that a sample of crushed prepackaged red peppers was detected as Sudan red
    , a dye that is not allowed to be added to food.

    through the Constant Food Monitoring Scheme.

    The CFS has informed the merchant concerned of the irregularity and instructed it to stop the sale and remove the affected batch of the product from its shelves

    The distributors concerned are also reclaiming
    as instructed by the Centre.

    The CFS is also tracing the origin
    of the affected batches of product.
     
    "Sudan red is a man-made chemical dye for industrial use and cannot be added to food under the Food Dye Regulation (Cap 132H

    Offenders are liable to a maximum fine of $50,000 and imprisonment for six months
    upon conviction.
