even if a person's blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels are normal, they are overweight or obese, they are more likely to develop coronary heart disease than healthy people of normal weight. Researchers recently analyzed health data from half a million Europeans, more than 7,600 of whom had coronary heart disease, and came to this conclusion.
Ioanna Tzoulaki of Imperial College London and colleagues compared each participant's body mass index with whether their metabolism was healthy. Moreover, the scientists classified the participants according to metabolic indicators and indicated whether they had high blood pressure, high blood sugar, low good cholesterol levels, or excess waist circumference.
Tzoulaki et al. calculated a series of influence factors and found that those classified as unhealthy had a double risk of coronary heart disease compared to healthy people who were normal weight, regardless of whether they were normal weight, overweight, or obese.
those with normal metabolic indicators but were overweight were also 26 percent more likely to develop coronary heart disease than healthy, normal-weight people, while those with normal weight were 28 percent more likely to develop coronary heart disease. The paper was recently published in
. The researchers said the findings suggested it seemed impossible to be "obese but healthy."
"I don't think there's going to be a concept of healthy obesity anymore." Tzoulaki said, "Our study shows that, if anything, overweight people classified as healthy just don't have unhealthy metabolic indicators." But it may just come later. (Source: Science.com Zhang)
