    Previous research by He Yuehui's team found that during seedling vernalization, the B3 domain proteins VAL1 and VAL2 recognize Cold Memory Element (CME ) DNA elements at the FLC site , recruit the Polycomb protein complex ( PRC2 ) and silence FLC expression (Yuan et al.


    The newly published study found that in late embryonic development, the B3 domain transcription factor ABI3 recognizes CME sequences and recruits a supercomplex composed of the scaffold protein FRIGIDA (FRI) and activating chromatin modifiers ( FRIc ), which are stained in FLC .

    This study, along with previous work by the team, revealed a critical role for the seed-specific LAFL gene regulatory network ( LEC1 , LEC2 , FUS3 and ABI3 ) in resetting "vernalized memory" .
