The reporter learned from the Harbin Veterinary Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences on November 7 that the latest research by the team of academician Chen Hualan found that the H5N8 subtype avian influenza virus, which is highly lethal to the poultry industry, was introduced into China through swans at the end of last year and early this year.
Since 2020, the H5N8 virus has caused nearly 2,800 outbreaks of poultry and wild birds in more than 20 countries in Europe and Asia, resulting in the death or culling of more than 33 million poultry, causing huge economic losses to the global poultry industry
The team collected and analyzed 41,172 poultry swab samples and 317 wild bird samples between September 2020 and June 2021, and isolated 36 strains of H5N8 virus, 22 from wild birds and 14 from ducks and geese
These viruses are divided into two genetic types.
The viruses were found to be highly lethal to chickens, mild to ducks, and virulence in mice varied by strain
Given that the widespread H5N8 virus in wild birds poses a persistent threat to poultry and public health, this study strongly calls for high-risk countries to immunize poultry with H5 vaccine, which can effectively block the introduction of the virus from wild birds to poultry and protect human life and health
