Crohn's disease (CD) has been associated with an increased risk of small bowel cancer (SBC), but previous studies have been rareIn a recent study published in Gut, an authoritative journal of digestive diseases, researchers aim to assess the risk of SBC and SBC death in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)population-based cohort study of IBD patients and matching general population controls for the period 1969-2017 in Sweden and Denmark, the researchers assessed the risk of SBC occurrence and SBC death and used Cox regression to estimate the adjusted risk ratio (aHRs)researchers identified 161,896 IBD patients (CD: 47370; UC: 97515; unclassified IBD: 17011)During follow-up, IBD patients were diagnosed with 237 Cases of SBC (CD: 24.4/100,000 people-year; UC: 5.88/100,000 people-year), compared to 640 cases in the control group (2.81 per 100,000 people-year and 3.32 per 100,000 years)This equates to one SBC in 385 CD patients and one SBC in 500 UC patients over a 10-year follow-up periodIn CD patients, SBC had aHR of 9.09 (95% CI of 7.34 to 11.3) and 1.85 (95% CI 1.43 to 2.39) in UC patientsExcluding the first year after the IBD diagnosis, aHR in CD patients decreased to 4.96 and AHR in UC patients decreased to 1.69In CD patients, HRs were the highest among patients with recently diagnosed childhood morbidity of recital and stenosis CDCD patients (aHR 6.59, 95% CI 4.74 to 9.15) and UC patients (aHR 1.57; 95% CI is 1.07 to 2.32) both increase the relative risk of SBC-related deaththus shows that SBC and SBC deaths are more common in IBD patients, especially CD patients, although the absolute risk is low
