    Norwegian genetics and breeding company GenoMar Genetics has achieved the world's first Specified Pathogen Free (SPF) certification for its tilapia breeding program in the Philippine.
     
    The GenoMar Tilapia Breeding Base is located at Central Luzon State University in the Philippines and was established in 199 The breeding project passed a three-year independent periodic audit by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) of the Philippines, including sample collection and PCR analysis, and was finally officially awarded SPF certificati.
     
    GenoMar said the auditing standards follow the guidelines of the OIE, an intergovernmental organization that coordinates, supports and promotes animal disease contr.
     
    This certification means that seed fish imported from the Philippine base maintain excellent health and have a low level of risk of transmitting tilapia pathoge.
    This SPF program covers the most common pathogens in tilapia farming worldwide: TiLV (Tilapia Lake Virus Disease), VER (Viral Encephalopathy and Retinopathy, also known as VNN) and Cytomegalovirus (Iridovirus Diseas.
