CoBRA International, one of the world's largest OEMs for water sports, automotive, marine and civil engineering composites, and Aditya Birla Chemicals, a leading manufacturer of epoxy resins and advanced materials, recently announced that their latest EPOx-based composite sustainability project has won the 2020 JEC Innovation Award.
COBRA, in partnership with customers Starboard and Maui Fin Company (MFC), has successfully applied new recyclable epoxy resins (Aditya Birla proprietary recycling technology) to the mass production of its water sports components and has initiated a closed-loop process to reuse reinforced fabrics and thermoplastic polymers produced during epoxy composite recovery.
COBRA has made a huge leap forward in sustainability by incorporating recyclable epoxy thermostation systems into mass production,
. COBRA and its partners have initiated a sustainable closed-loop recycling process using Aditya Birla's recyclable epoxy system Epotec YDL5552-THR9351 to add fin molds for water sports and to produce components using the recyclable epoxy RTM system Epotec YDL5540-THR9151, which will significantly reduce the waste of composite materials.
in late 2019, the company manufactured the first molds and designed and produced a variety of fins for its customers. After mechanical testing to confirm performance compensable to existing parts, right-handers and MFC skiers also tested the heatseed plates on the water to ensure that the new process did not affect the handling or feel of the planks and to give the green light to mass production.
"This is a remarkable achievement with
great potential to create more sustainable epoxy components," said Danu Chotikapanich, CEO of COBRA. "Building on the success of the project, COBRA and our partners are now focused on expanding the recycling infrastructure. Right and MFC will provide customers with recyclable epoxy fins throughout 2020, while COBRA is in the next phase of work to use recyclable epoxy resins for larger components and molds in the Group. Pradip Dubey, CEO of
Advanced Materials Aditya Birla Chemicals, commented, "We are committed to making a meaningful contribution to a sustainable world and developing products with a safe and low carbon footprint for a wide range of applications. "
