The first draft genome sequence of the monkeypox virus was released late last week, derived from swabs of skin lesions of confirmed cases in the current outbre.
There are currently nearly 200 cases of monkeypox (confirmed and suspected) linked to the recent outbreak around the wor.
"Determining the genome sequence of the viruses that cause these infections will certainly contribute to a better understanding of the epidemiology, source of infection, and mode of transmission," the authors wro.
The work was praised by the scientific community almost immediately after it was publish.
Dr Eddie Holmes, a virologist and evolutionary biologist at the University of Sydney, tweeted that the first draft genetic sequence of the "coronavirus associated with the new crown epidemic" was released on January 10, 202 Like the monkeypox sequence, it took only a few weeks to generate data and post it onli.
Monkeypox virus is an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus with a genome size of about 190 .
The paper, published onis the first draft genome sequence of a monkeypox virus associated with a massive outbreak affecting multiple countries around the wor.
The team then quickly performed a phylogenetic analysis of the vir.
