, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Finnish researchers have discovered a new variant of the new coronavirus that nucleic acid testing may fail, the Central News Agency reported Monday, citing Finnish state broadcaster YLE.
The Vita laboratory in Helsinki, Finland, reportedly said the variant, known as Fin-796H, was similar in part to the variant found in the UK and South Africa and was a "unique" variant of the two.
, a researcher at the lab, said, "We found this variant in a patient last week, and it's not clear how infectious it is and how resistant it is to vaccines," said Merry, a researcher at the lab, according to the report. Meri also said that because of the relatively low infection rate in Finland, it is unlikely that the mutated virus will evolve in Finland.
For this newly discovered variant, Avieng, director of research at the Institute of Biotechnology at the University of Helsinki, said, "The newly discovered variant is not the same as expected and is not genetically similar to any other known variant." It
worth noting that researchers at the Vitamin Laboratory also believe that the newly discovered mutant virus may not be screened for nucleic acid testing.
