When the liver is inflamed, you may not have any obvious symptoms
Bile (digestive juice produced by the liver) usually flows between the liver cells and the duodenum (the first segment of the small intestine)
However, when the flow of bile is reduced or stopped, the bilirubin pigment (a waste product) escapes into the blood
As this process progresses, more and more bilirubin (waste produced by aging and damaged red blood cells) seeps into the blood and accumulates in large amounts
Bilirubin should be excreted from the body, excluding symptoms of jaundice
More serious side effects include internal bleeding and worsening brain function
The MSD manual recommends that the best treatment is to stop drinking
The more alcohol a person drinks, the greater the damage to the liver
The magic is that when about 80% of the organs are damaged, the liver can continue to function
However, if the liver damage exceeds the critical point, a person may die from excessive drinking
There are three different stages of fatty liver:
Liver steatosis
Alcoholic hepatitis
The percentage of people with cirrhosis who drink more than the 14 units of alcohol recommended by the NHS
At this stage of the disease, a large amount of liver tissue is permanently replaced by scar tissue
This is when liver function is affected, the liver may shrink
Cirrhosis of the liver can lead to further complications, such as liver failure, portal hypertension, and loss of brain function
People with loss of brain function may become drowsy and confused in daily life
